The north of Gran Canaria has the wildest and craggiest landscapes on the island. The coast there snakes in and out with stunning cliffs holding back the fury of the Atlantic. We shall visit some of the island’s most emblematic towns and villages. As we have often said, each corner is a world unto itself.
Ingenio. The town of Ingenio holds surprises for us with its picturesque corners which conserve its historic heritage. Its existence is owed to the cultivation of sugar cane. One of the traditions still active today in this town is that of the artisan production of textiles, with their laborious drawn-thread work, all due to the efforts of the women of the town.
Arucas. Arucas offers an experience full of sensations which start as soon as you arrive in its historic centre. The old quarter of Arucas holds official status as being of historic and artistic interest. The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is the architectural building with greatest presence and social value in the town. Heritage, culture and tradition will accompany you throughout your visit to this town.
The visit to the Arehucas rum distillery is not included in the excursion’s itinerary.
Teror. This is a pilgrimage destination for the Gran Canaria islanders, with the Basilica of the Virgen del Pino, the patroness of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. Teror’s main square is the nerve centre of the town, and from here you can enjoy the balconies, typical of Canary Island architecture, which adorn a large part of the town. It’s a wide square which you will pass though on your way to the town’s historic quarter, and it also contains the entrance to the Basilica.
Firgas. The historic quarter of Firgas is well worth strolling around to enjoy the town’s many nooks and crannies of tourist interest. We can visit the Paseo de Gran Canaria and Paseo de Canarias, promenades right in the town centre following what was previously known as Calle Real del Centro. The beauty of Firgas lies in visiting “the Balcony of the Atlantic”, with the loveliest of views out over the ocean, and of all of the north, east and west of Gran Canaria.
Puerto de las Nieves. The Puerto de Las Nieves (Las Nieves Port) is the coastal zone of the town of Agaete. Nowadays it has become the main maritime connection for Gran Canaria with Tenerife. This is a charming picturesque fishing village lying on the north coast of Gran Canaria. It has the typical atmosphere and character of the Canary Islands, and striking cliffs.
The small beaches are impressive and, although they are stony, they have cold crystal-clear water. The image of the Roque Partido, known popularly as “God’s Finger”, has now passed into history.
